Final stretch 180 miles

30 Jun

Coming out of Wrangell-St. Elias, we have emerged back into civilization where I have phone reception to post this. Absolutely amazing time- bearing in mind this is my 4th trip- the remoteness of McArthy was breathtaking! Deborah liked it so much, she decided to extend her stay over 4th of July weekend 🙂
Hard to believe places like this still exist. Amy has done it again. My Alaska addiction continues… More posts and photos to come from all of us.

Valdez to McArthy & Wrangell-St.Elias Park

27 Jun

What an amazing past 24hr! We left Kenai and via the ferry from Whittier we crossed the Prince William sound- the highlight sight being a “Galloping Glacier” that was retreating at a rapid 30 feet per day! The result is the icebergs you see in photos of the sound http://alaskaexplosion.com/media/prince-william-sound/

After an entertaining night in Valdez- we hit the road again on the Richardson Highway passing amazing waterfalls, peaks and glaciers. Cloudy and foggy weather gave the landscape a mystic feel- but just as breathtaking- temperature is around 52F. Wr are feeling plenty warm unless Amy wanders too far near the ice during our countless photo stops.

We are now filling up at the last gas station before McArthy and Wrangell-St. Elias park. Looking forward to some outdoor activities after we get in tomorrow- especially the rafting!

The Last Salmon…

22 Jun

On my last trip to Alaska- I caught a king salmon- (around 30-40lbs)- it was one of the most unlikely catches- I was literally falling asleep after a day of hiking, late night partying and had about 2 hours sleep in the land of the midnight sun- only to get up at 6am to hit tower rock fishing station. A few hours out on the kenai river, I remember about to drop of asleep holding out the fishing rod over the edge of the boat when out of nowhere the bite of the king salmon forced the reel of my rod! I jolted forward and entered “matrix” slow motion as I lunged to grab the reel from falling in and losing my catch. Our fishing guide was as shocked as I was to seeing this and said, “That is not meant to happen”, as he helped me fasten the reel back to the rod and I reeled the king salmon in… What a day. So now I present to you my salmon culinary “Grilled salmon with pasta sauce over Italian potato Ginocchi”- this my last salmon meal before the trip in hopes of catching the real thing again in a few days- nothing beats a fresh king salmon eaten the same day- I look forward to tasting the difference- maybe Alexander the Dutch will catch it this year 🙂
